YALITCHAT Query-Kick Around Contest

Frequently Asked Questions

I’d like to enter the contest but I’m not a member of YALITCHAT.ORG. What can I do?
You may enter. However, there is an entry fee of $20.00.

Why do non-subscribers have to pay to enter the contest?
FREE contest entry is a benefit offered to annual subscribers of YALITCHAT.ORG. You may join here.

How does the voting process work?
Once submissions close, voting will take place within http://YALITCHAT.ORG. There is a group set up just for voting. You login to YALITCHAT.ORG, click to join the group (2010 Query Contest Voting Booth), then enter the work/book title ONLY in the comments section. Each entry counts as one vote for that entry. You may vote for your own entry and you may vote more than once so long as it is for a different entry each time.

I follow some of the judges on twitter. Can I ask if they’ve received my submission?
That is not advised.

If I join YALITCHAT.ORG after I enter the contest, can I get my entry fee back?
Unfortunately, no. However, it will entitle you to all future benefits.

How do you select your judges?
We try to select a cross section of interests and styles from those industry pros who have expressed an interest in supporting authors in this way. At times, we will solicit the help of pros, pitch the concept of the contest and find they are very happy to lend their time and expertise.

Can I enter more than one work?
You may enter each contest only once.

If I enter more than one work, do I have to pay each time?
You may enter each contest only once.

Do you retain rights to my work once I submit it?
No. You retain all rights. However, we reserve the right to post your submission on any one of our sites for voting, promotion and publicity purposes. You grant us that right upon entry. Our sites include YALITCHAT.ORG, YALITCHAT.COM, https://yalitchatquerycontest.wordpress.com and georgiamcbridebooks.wordpress.com. Your work may also be posted on the associated site of our contest software provider, but only as it relates to providing the service to us.

I have an agent, can I enter the contest?
We do not advocate agented authors entering contests without the consent of their agent.

I landed an agent after I entered the contest, what should I do?
Please let us know as soon as possible so we can remove your work from consideration. You may send an email. Visit the Contact page for more info.

How do you decide which query is the best?
The “best” query is based on the concept of market conditions at the time of judging. So in essence, the judges are looking for the query with the most potential in the market at that time. Of course, it also has to be well executed form-wise.

How do you decide which query is the most improved?
Of the ten finalists all judges decide from the initial review to the revised submission which of the ten is most improved.

What other contest do you run?
